Questions and Answers

Can you verify the collection name and finish you used in this kitchen design?
We used the Bradbury Collection in the Polished Nickel finish.
Tell us about why you chose Atlas Homewares for this design.
We absolutely love the Bradbury Collection by Atlas Homewares. The blend of modern clean lines and traditional details, such as rivets, was perfect for this project. Atlas is one of our preferred hardware companies to collaborate with, offering appealing designs at competitive prices. The timeless style complements many of our projects.
Describe the project and how you fulfilled your plans for the space.
This project involved the renovation of the first floor of a house built in 1925 in Grand Rapids, Michigan. Our goal was to remove the original kitchen, take down the wall that separated the kitchen and dining room, add a mudroom, and create a space that suited the family's lifestyle. They frequently host large groups of friends and family, so we wanted the space to cater to that. It was also important for the renovation to maintain the home's original style and feel while modernizing the space. Upon entering, we want the renovation to feel fresh yet harmonious with the original 1920s home.
Did you run into any challenges with this specific project?
Working in old homes always presents unique challenges. Our main challenge with this project, from a design perspective, was planning out the space. Old homes often have unconventional layouts due to how people lived in the 1920s. Despite this, we successfully designed the kitchen layout to meet our client's needs within the physical constraints we had to work with. They love it, so that makes us happy!
Tell us about yourself and your firm, your design style and/or passion/inspiration?
Oh, the golden question! I appreciate all design styles, so I'd have to say that I'm eclectic. However, if I had to describe my style, I'd say it's traditional with a modern and global influence. I try to maintain a sense of harmony in everything I do. When it comes to designing for my clients, I'm inspired by their passions, stories, and lives. I draw from their unique experiences to create a home that truly reflects their personalities.
Where do you go to get new ideas and inspiration?
I don't have the time or means to travel the world at the moment, so I find inspiration by following various accounts on social media. I enjoy looking at architecture from around the world, as well as other creative works, art, design, and gardening. I love seeing how color is used and displayed, whether it's in art or found organically in nature. In addition to social media, I also find magazines to be a great source of inspiration.
Did you visit a showroom for the hardware? If so, where did you visit?
Over time, we have built up our own little library of hardware samples, and the Bradbury Collection was part of our in-office hardware library. While developing the designs for this project, the collection stood out as the perfect hardware for their kitchen. We even used it in a few other areas of their home but in different finishes!
What hardware trends are you seeing today?
We are seeing more mixed hardware, meaning the combination of pulls, knobs, and latches all in one space. It used to be popular to use only pulls or only knobs, but now, designers are combining different configurations to create a unique look. As someone who appreciates attention to detail, I am excited about this new trend.
Do you have any tips about how to choose the best hardware for your space, lifestyle, and/or style preferences?
Feel it and see it in person; I think the way it feels in your hand is so important.
What’s the best interior design lesson you have learned?
In general, I have learned to have patience, listen, and trust the process. With hardware, count twice, if not three times, and don’t go too small!
