Questions and Answers

Tell us about why you chose Atlas Homewares for this bathroom design.
We loved the style of the Oskar Pulls for this kitchen! The lines are clean, but not too contemporary, and the base provided just enough substance while remaining classic and refined. We wanted to achieve a transitional coastal look, and we thought the Oskar Pulls were perfect! The Slate finish added the right amount of contrast and bold style, and looked fantastic with the cabinets.
Describe the room/project and how it fulfilled your client’s plans for the space.
Our clients purchased this Jacksonville beachfront condo as a second home and will likely retire here. The unit was dark and outdated, and our clients desired a light, bright and coastal-inspired unit with a focus on quality products and finishes, ease of maintenance and design that incorporated just enough blue throughout. The kitchen and bathrooms were done in a white, recessed panel cabinet, which allowed us to enhance the space with a few bolder colors and rich finishes.
Tell us about yourself and your firm, your design style and/or passion/inspiration?
I have loved creating spaces since I was a young girl. As far back as I can remember, I had an appreciation for a beautiful and functional space, specifically in the way that space made me feel. My background is quite varied with over 30 years of experience in real estate, business, retail sales management and interior design. Everything I've learned over the years has enabled me to bring a unique perspective and skill set to our current business. Our retail showroom and design firm employ a team of eight and we provide services that range from simple design consultations to full house renovations. We love to design casual, sophisticated spaces that our clients are proud to show off, that invite family and friends to linger and ultimately warmly envelop those clients at the end of the day!
Where do you go to get new ideas and inspiration?
Many of our designs are inspired by something that our clients love or want to incorporate into their space, but we also stay on top of design trends and new products by attending industry conferences and furniture markets regularly. I enjoyed seeing the wide range of products available at the Atlas KBIS booth this year!
Did you run into any challenges with this specific project?
To keep the budget in line, we chose to keep the existing footprint of the kitchen, but replace everything. From a design standpoint, the biggest challenge was working with the ceiling, which had exposed concrete, was heavily textured and encompassed a significant amount of track lighting. We updated all lighting fixtures and painted the ceiling a stunning shade of black to let the materials, finishes, and design of the living space be a focus.
Which design trends are you most excited about in 2020?
I'm looking forward to incorporating more natural and textural elements like rattan and wicker in my designs. I'm also excited to see the return of warmer tones and natural woods, especially in cabinetry. Finally, I'm loving the warm golds, bronzes, and champagnes that are back in a big way and I intend to specify and incorporate those finishes in lighting, hardware, and accessories.
What’s the best interior design lesson you have learned?
I have two. Firstly, the scale is everything and can truly make or break a space. Secondly, craftsmanship and quality are critical. I encourage my clients to go with the best products and materials that their budget will allow.
